Shot to fame with ‘Tum Hee Ho’? or is there more to this man?

At the moment, the king of soul, Arijit Singh, is one of the most popular singers in Bollywood. He has a dedicated fan following all over the world and is one of the few artists who has managed to cross over genres and cultures in his deliverance.

Powerful songs like “Phir Mohabbat Karne Chala” and “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” set Arijit’s career alight, But where did it all really start? Where is it going? What’s the story on Arijit Singh?

Born on 25th April 1987 in West Bengal India, to a Sikh Father, Kakkar Singh, and Bengali mother Aditi Singh, Arijit started his musical training at a very early age at his house. His family from his mother’s side were all trained in music. His maternal grandfather was a singer as well and, his maternal aunt trained in classical music. His mother also sang and played table along with her brother.

If we talk about his educational background, Arijit Singh studied at Raja Bijay Singh High School and later at the Sripat Singh College, a University of Kalyani affiliate.

His parents decided to get him trained in music so he might pursue a career in music. So Rajendra Prasad Hazari took the responsibility to train him in Rabindra Sangeet (songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore) and pop music. Whereas, Dhirendra Prasad Hazari helped him train in tabla.

Arijit’s training started at the age of three. At the age of nine, he received a scholarship from the government for his vocal in Indian classical music. Growing up, he listened to Mozart, Beethoven, and Bengali classical music. He idolized musicians like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Zakir Hussain, and Anand Chatterjee. And the ones he enjoyed listening to were Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, and Manna Dey.

Arijit Singh’s teacher, Rajendra Prasad Hazari, believed that classical music was out of date. Though, classical music was essential for a person to become a singer. But it was not good enough to adopt as a profession. So he suggested to Arijit Singh that he should leave his hometown and participate in the reality show Fame Gurukul (2005) at the age of 18.

Arijit competed with all his talent and experience but did not win the show. He came 6th, and then he was eliminated by the audience poll. But he losing the competition was of no matter. Because during the show, Sanjay Leela Bansali, one of the biggest film directors in India, recognized his voice and offered him a song for his upcoming film Saawariya. The song is known as “Yun Shabnami”.

Arijit Singh was very excited about his big break in Bollywood. He put his all strength into it and recorded the song with Sanjay Leela Bansali. But unfortunately, the script changed, and the song was no longer part of the movie. It was never released. This experience deterred Arijit for a while, but he did not give up.

In 2006, Arijit Singh participated in another music competition show known as “Das Ke Das Le Gaye Dil”. He won the competition and got a handsome amount of money, as a reward. Arijit took the winning money and moved to Mumbai. He used his award money to build his studio, where he started producing music.

Arijit now produced music for advertisements, news channels, and radio stations. And eventually, he began to do production for music directors such as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Mithoon, Monty Sharma, and Pritam. While working with other composers, he supervised the vocals and the chorus sections. It was while working with Pritam that he began to produce and program music by himself. The famous films he worked on with Pritam were Golmaal 3, Crook, and Action Replay. But not as a singer.

In 2010, Arijit Singh made his Telugu Film Industry debut by singing a song for Sandeep Chowta. And next year, in 2011, Arijit Singh finally made his Bollywood debut with the music director Mithoon. He recorded the song “Phir Mohabbat Karne Chala”. Which was an overnight hit. After his debut, Pritam offered him two films. Players and Barfi. They were again great hits. The songs were “Jhoom Jhoom Ta Hoon Main” and “Phir Le Aya Dil”.

On the back of their success, more people from the industry started to give him offers of singing for them. And then the breakthrough came. In 2013, he recorded one of his greatest hit songs, “Tum Hee Ho”, for the movie, Aashiqui 2. It was the occasion when a film was a hit because of the songs it carried in it. For this, the very first time, he was awarded the Film Fare Award. The award was for the best playback singer. And along came the stardom he never thought of. Right after the release,

Arijit became an international star. And people all over the world started to listen to his songs. He never stopped surprising his fans and admirers. Every song he released, was loved by the masses.
